Reed is perhaps best known for her role as Mary Bailey in the 1946 holiday classic "It's a Wonderful Life." She also starred in films such as "From Here to Eternity," for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

In addition to her film work, Reed had a successful career on television. She starred in her own sitcom, "The Donna Reed Show," which ran from 1958 to 1966, and earned her a Golden Globe award for Best Actress in a Television Series. She also appeared in guest roles on popular shows such as "The Love Boat" and "Dallas."

Reed was also involved in various charitable causes throughout her life. She was a supporter of the American Cancer Society and served as the national chairperson of its annual fundraising drive in 1971.
