Gale Sondergaard (February 15, 1899 – August 14, 1985) was an American actress best known for her roles in the films "Anthony Adverse" (1936) and "The Letter" (1940), for which she received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress.

Born in Minnesota, Sondergaard initially pursued a career in theater before transitioning to film in the 1930s. She made her film debut in "The Cat and the Canary" (1939) and went on to appear in numerous films throughout the decade.

Sondergaard was known for her ability to play a wide range of characters, from sympathetic heroines to manipulative villains. Her portrayal of Faith Paleologus in "Anthony Adverse" earned her critical acclaim and the first-ever Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1937.

Sondergaard continued to work steadily throughout the 1940s, appearing in films such as "The Mark of Zorro" (1940) and "The Spider Woman" (1944). However, her career was derailed in 1947 when she and her husband, director Herbert Biberman, were blacklisted during the McCarthy era for their alleged communist sympathies.
