Louis Gossett Jr. (May 27, 1936 – March 29, 2024) was an American actor, director, and producer who has been active in the entertainment industry for over six decades.

Gossett began his acting career in the late 1950s, appearing in several Off-Broadway productions. He made his film debut in 1961 in the drama "A Raisin in the Sun," which was based on the acclaimed play of the same name by Lorraine Hansberry. He went on to appear in numerous films throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including "The Landlord" (1970), "The Deep" (1977), and "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In addition to his film work, Gossett has also had a successful career on television. He starred in the TV series "The Young Rebels" (1970-1971) and "Sadat" (1983), and he won an Emmy Award for his performance in the miniseries "Roots" (1977). He has also made guest appearances on several popular TV shows, including "The Jeffersons," "ER," and "JAG."

Throughout his career, Gossett has strongly advocated social justice and civil rights. He was a friend and supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and he has worked with numerous organizations dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged communities. In 2006, he founded the Eracism Foundation, which is dedicated to eradicating racism and promoting diversity and inclusion.
