He made his film debut in 1961 in the drama "A Raisin in the Sun," which was based on the acclaimed play of the same name by Lorraine Hansberry. He went on to appear in numerous films throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including "The Landlord" (1970), "The Deep" (1977), and "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
In addition to his film work, Gossett has also had a successful career on television. He starred in the TV series "The Young Rebels" (1970-1971) and "Sadat" (1983), and he won an Emmy Award for his performance in the miniseries "Roots" (1977). He was a friend and supporter of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and he has worked with numerous organizations dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged communities.
