Louis Gossett Jr. (born May 27, 1936) is an American actor known for his work in film, television, and theater. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in a middle-class African-American family.
Gossett began his acting career in the late 1950s, appearing in a number of Off-Broadway productions. He made his film debut in "A Raisin in the Sun" (1961), and went on to appear in numerous films throughout the 1960s and 1970s, including "The Landlord" (1970), "Skin Game" (1971), and "The Deep" (1977).
In 1982, Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Sgt. Emil Foley in "An Officer and a Gentleman" (1982). The role also earned him a Golden Globe Award and a British Academy Film Award.
Gossett's other notable film roles include Fiddler in the television miniseries "Roots" (1977), for which he won an Emmy Award, "Iron Eagle" (1986), and "Diggstown" (1992). He has also appeared in a number of television shows, including "ER," "JAG," and "Boardwalk Empire."
