Maureen Stapleton (June 21, 1925 – March 13, 2006) was an American actress who was widely regarded as one of the finest performers of her generation. Her career spanned over five decades, during which she appeared in a wide variety of films, stage productions, and television shows.

Stapleton began her acting career in the theater, making her Broadway debut in 1946 in the play "The Playboy of the Western World". She went on to appear in many notable productions, including "The Rose Tattoo", "Orpheus Descending", and "The Glass Menagerie". She won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her performance in the 1951 production of "The Rose Tattoo".

Stapleton made her film debut in 1958 in "Lonelyhearts", and went on to appear in many notable films throughout her career. She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in "Lonelyhearts", and won the award for her role in "Reds" (1981). She also appeared in "Airport" (1970), "Interiors" (1978), and "Cocoon" (1985), among others.

In addition to her work on stage and in film, Stapleton was a prolific television actress. She appeared in many popular shows, including "The Patty Duke Show", "The Bionic Woman", and "The Love Boat". She won three Emmy Awards for her work on television, including one for her role in the miniseries "Queen of the Stardust Ballroom".

Throughout her career, Stapleton was widely regarded as one of the finest actresses of her generation. She was known for her ability to convey deep emotion and for her powerful performances in both dramatic and comedic roles. She was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1981, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1987. She passed away in 2006 at the age of 80.
