Umeki went on to appear in several other films, including "Sayonara," for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1958. She was the first Asian actress to win an Academy Award.

Umeki continued to work in film and television throughout the 1960s and 1970s, appearing in productions such as "Cry for Happy," "A Girl Named Tamiko," and "The Courtship of Eddie's Father."
