Rod Steiger was an American actor born on April 14, 1925, in Westhampton, New York. He was known for his versatile acting abilities and intense on-screen presence, which made him a favorite among film audiences and critics alike.

Steiger started his acting career in the 1940s, initially in theater and later in film. He gained recognition for his role as Marlon Brando's older brother in the film "On the Waterfront" (1954), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He went on to appear in numerous films throughout the 1950s and 1960s, including "The Big Knife" (1955), "The Harder They Fall" (1956), and "The Pawnbroker" (1964).

In 1967, Steiger won an Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the police chief in "In the Heat of the Night." He was praised for his ability to capture the racial tension and conflict in the film, which was set in a southern town during the civil rights era.

Steiger continued to act in films and television throughout the 1970s and 1980s, appearing in notable films such as "Waterloo" (1970), "W.C. Fields and Me" (1976), and "The Amityville Horror" (1979). He also ventured into directing, with his most notable film being "The Ballad of the Sad Cafe" (1991).

Steiger's career spanned over five decades, and he is remembered as one of the most talented actors of his generation. He passed away on July 9, 2002, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 77.
