Shelley Winters was an American actress who had a long and successful career in film, television, and theatre. She was born on August 18, 1920, in St. Louis, Missouri, and began her career in the theatre in the 1940s.

Winters made her film debut in the 1943 film "What a Woman!" and went on to appear in many films throughout her career, including "A Place in the Sun," "The Diary of Anne Frank," and "The Poseidon Adventure." She won Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress for her roles in the films "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1959) and "A Patch of Blue" (1965).

Winters was also a familiar face on television, appearing in many shows throughout her career, including "The Twilight Zone," "Batman," and "Roseanne." She won an Emmy Award for her role in the TV movie "A Streetcar Named Desire" in 1984.

In addition to her film and television work, Winters was a respected stage actress, appearing in many productions on and off Broadway. She won a Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Play for her role in the 1959 Broadway production of "The Diary of Anne Frank."
