Van Heflin was an American actor born on December 13, 1910, in Walters, Oklahoma. He began his career on stage in the 1930s before transitioning to film in the 1940s. Heflin appeared in over 70 films throughout his career and was known for his versatility as an actor.

Heflin's breakthrough role came in the 1942 film "Johnny Eager," for which he received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also received critical acclaim for his role in the film "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" (1946), in which he starred alongside Barbara Stanwyck.

Heflin's other notable film roles include "Shane" (1953), "3:10 to Yuma" (1957), and "Airport" (1970). He also appeared in several stage productions, including the original Broadway production of "The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial" in 1954.

In addition to his work in film and on stage, Heflin was also a successful radio and television actor. He won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1953 for his performance in the television series "The United States Steel Hour."

Heflin was married twice and had three children. He passed away on July 23, 1971, at the age of 60 from a heart attack.
