Aretha Franklin was an American singer, songwriter, and pianist. Often referred to as "The Queen of Soul," she is widely considered one of the most important and influential figures in the history of popular music.
She began her career as a gospel singer in her father's church in Detroit, Michigan before gaining fame in the 1960s with hit singles such as "Respect," "Chain of Fools," "Think," and "I Say a Little Prayer." Over the course of her career, Franklin released numerous albums and singles and won numerous awards, including 18 Grammy Awards and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was also the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987. Franklin passed away on August 16, 2018.
