Twitter, Inc. is an American communications company based in San Francisco, California. The company operates the microblogging and social networking service Twitter. It previously served the Vine short video app and Periscoped live streaming service.

Twitter was created in March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams and launched in July 2006. As of 2012, more than 100 million users posted 340 million tweets daily, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion search queries per day. The company went public in November 2013. As of early 2019, Twitter had over 330 million monthly active users.

On April 25, 2022, Twitter's board of directors agreed to a $44 billion purchase by SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, potentially making it one of the largest deals to take the company private. Musk terminated the deal on July 8, 2022. As a result, Twitter's shares experienced a decline and the company hired a US law firm to take legal action against Musk, launching a lawsuit against him in Delaware's Chancery Court on July 12.

Musk announced his intention to close the deal, as agreed. 4, at $54.20 per share, equivalent to a purchase of $44 billion. The agreement closed on October 27, leaving Musk the owner of the company and Twitter being delisted from the New York Stock Exchange.

Williams was previously chairman and CEO of Twitter, Inc. He also founded Blogger and Medium, two of the largest internet platforms of their kind. In 2014, he co-founded the venture capital firm Obvious Ventures.

3. Dick Costolo (2010–2015)

Richard William Costolo is an American businessman. He was the CEO of Twitter, Inc. from 2010 to 2015 and served as the COO before becoming CEO. He took over as CEO from Evan Williams in October 2010. On June 11, 2015, it was announced that Costolo would step down as CEO on July 1, 2015, and would be replaced by Twitter co-founder and chairman Jack Dorsey on an interim basis until the Board of Directors could find a replacement. On August 8, 2015, The New York Times reported that Costolo would be leaving Twitter's Board of Directors by the end of the year or when a new CEO was appointed.

4. Jack Dorsey (2015–2021); second term

On June 10, 2015, Costolo announced his resignation as CEO, effective July 1, 2015. Dorsey assumed the position of interim CEO upon Costolo's departure. He was named permanent CEO on 5 October 2015. It was his second term as a Twitter CEO.

Parag Agrawal is an Indian-American software engineer who served as CEO of Twitter, Inc. from late November 2021 to late October 2022. He was fired, along with two other top Twitter executives, on 27 October 2022, following Elon Musk’s purchase of the company.

6. Elon Musk (2022–2023)
