A Union Territory is a region or area that is directly governed by the Government of India, rather than by the individual state government. These areas are typically smaller in size and population compared to states, and are usually located in strategically important regions or areas with unique characteristics.
The Indian Constitution grants the President of India the power to administer Union Territories through an Administrator appointed by him/her. The Administrator is usually a senior government official from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), or Indian Forest Service (IFS). The Administrator is responsible for the overall administration of the Union Territory and is assisted by a council of Ministers.
There are currently 9 Union Territories in India, which include:
Andaman and Nicobar Islands - This Union Territory is located in the Bay of Bengal and comprises of a group of islands. It is known for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and dense forests.
Chandigarh - This Union Territory is located in the north of India and serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. It is known for its modern architecture and urban planning.
Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu - This Union Territory is located on the western coast of India and comprises of two separate areas - Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
Lakshadweep - This Union Territory is located in the Arabian Sea and comprises of a group of islands. It is known for its beautiful beaches and coral reefs.
Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry) - This Union Territory is located on the eastern coast of India and was a former French colony. It is known for its French architecture and beautiful beaches.
Delhi - The National Capital Territory of Delhi is a Union Territory that serves as the capital of India. It is known for its rich history and cultural heritage.
Lakshadweep - This Union Territory is located in the Arabian Sea and comprises of a group of islands. It is known for its beautiful beaches and coral reefs.
