Dame Peggy Ashcroft (22 December 1907 – 14 June 1991) was a renowned British actress whose career spanned over six decades. She was born in Croydon, London and grew up in India, where her father was a civil servant. Her early exposure to Indian culture would later inform many of her performances.

Ashcroft began her stage career in 1927 and quickly established herself as a talented and versatile actress. She worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) for many years and played a wide range of roles in classical theatre, including Juliet in Romeo and Juliet, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, and Queen Margaret in Richard III.

Ashcroft's film career began in the 1930s and continued until the 1980s. She appeared in many notable films, including A Passage to India (1984), for which she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Other memorable film roles include Mistress Quickly in Chimes at Midnight (1965), Edith de Haviland in The Jewel in the Crown (1984), and Mrs. Moore in A Passage to India.

In addition to her stage and film work, Ashcroft was also a prominent television actress, appearing in many dramas and adaptations throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s. She was awarded the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actress in 1963 for her performance in The Saint.
