Born on July 11, 1892, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Mitchell began his career in entertainment as a playwright and actor in New York City. He made his Broadway debut in 1913 and went on to write and star in several plays, including "The New York Idea" and "A Very Rich Woman."

In the 1930s, Mitchell transitioned to film and quickly became a sought-after character actor, appearing in over 70 movies over the course of his career. He won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1940 for his role as Uncle Billy in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life." Mitchell also appeared in other notable films such as "Gone with the Wind," "Stagecoach," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," and "High Noon."

In addition to his work in film, Mitchell was also an accomplished stage actor and director, receiving a Tony Award in 1953 for his direction of the Broadway play "Hazel Flagg."
